2022 Ford F150 Buyers’ Guide – Specs, Features, and More

thumbnail image

The Ford F150 needs no introduction. The F-Series from Ford has been and still is the highest-selling truck in the U.S. for 45 years straight and the top-selling vehicle for 40 years straight. If that wasn’t enough, Ford also just celebrated the milestone of building 40 million examples in the F-Series family. Much of this success can be attributed to Ford’s rugged approach to building trucks and its ability to keep up with the market.

Interestingly, the 40-millionth F-Series was a 2022 Ford F150 Tremor. The Tremor is a newly-introduced off-road package that aims to be a more attainable offering than the top-spec Raptor. However, that’s not all the 2022 model has to offer. Here’s a quick rundown of what to expect with the new F150.

Changes to the Fourteenth-Generation Ford F150

The biggest changes on the fourteenth generation of America’s favorite truck include improvements to the design, features, and performance. Each generation of the Ford F150 has a lifespan of around five years.

The current or fourteenth generation only just made its debut last year. This updated F150 was introduced for the 2021 model year and brought with it some notable improvements. While the styling might suggest otherwise, Ford has reworked the majority of the body panels on this version. The company now offers an astonishing 11 different grilles for 2022, which goes to show just how far you can customize these trucks from the factory.

That being said, this latest model of F150 is an evolution and not a revolution. That becomes quite clear when you look at the updates. This generation was the first to receive a sizable 12-inch touchscreen that’s available on most trims — a trend that many car manufacturers have borrowed from the EV segment.

Other improvements to the interior include ‘Max Recline’ front seats and a fold-flat center console. The seats, as their name suggests, fold to nearly 180 degrees, giving you a nearly flat sleeping surface. The patented mechanism also allows for the bottom of the seat to move up a few inches, while the backrest features adjustability.

On the performance side of things, the biggest improvement comes down to the PowerBoost hybrid powertrain. This setup promises to offer the highest power, torque, and fuel economy in the F150’s extensive engine list, which is impressive, to say the least.

The hybrid F150 can also be optioned with a 7.2-kW Pro Power Onboard generator. Ford has said that this new feature will let you power a mobile metal shop for up to 32 hours. This includes running powering tools like a plasma cutter, chop saw, air compressor, and more simultaneously. Ford has said that there’s enough energy to power 28 average refrigerators.

What’s New For the 2022 Model?

New additions to the 2022 Ford F150 include changes to the engine line-up and cosmetic additions.

As the 2022 model year is only the second year for the fourteenth generation, everything we’ve seen from the last year’s model has carried over. This includes the changes to the exterior, interior and powertrain options. However, there are no more Power Stroke diesel engines as they have been discontinued.

Ford has also ditched the Kodiak Brown, Lead Foot, and Guard color options on the 2022 model year. Additions come in the form of an Atlas Blue color along with optional black trim for the XL, XLT, and Lariat trims.

The 2022 Ford F150 also gets a Bed Utility package that is available with almost every trim. This package includes accessories like tie-down brackets and cleats, an LED light switch, a rear step, and a plastic bed liner. 2022 is also the first full model year for the redesigned F150 Raptor and the F150 Tremor.

New Features and Other Goodies

While there are many new features worth mentioning, the crown jewel of the 2022 model is BlueCruise. BlueCruise is essentially Ford’s hands-free driving system. It works in conjunction with the truck’s Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go, Lane Centering, and Speed Sign Recognition. This system can be used on ‘Hands-Free Blue Zones’ that make up over 130,000 miles of North American roads. The BlueCruise system can be added to all but the XL and XLT trims.

The 2022 Ford F150 is being shipped with BlueCruise, while 2021 model year trucks have to install it via an over-the-air (OTA) update. The hands-free driving system uses blue lighting on the digital instrument cluster to indicate when the vehicle is in a hands-free zone. Speaking of the digital instrument cluster, Ford took things to the next level with the fourteenth-generation F150.

The new truck gets a high-resolution instrument cluster while the higher-spec trims also get a large 12-inch touchscreen for infotainment. Both these screens come together to give the 2022 Ford F150 a modern interior. The lower trim levels get a smaller 8-inch touchscreen, but both systems run Ford’s Sync 4 interface. This interface supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The 2022 Ford F150 also gets an 8-speaker sound system by Bang & Olufsen which is available starting on XLT trim, while the optional 18-speaker ‘Bang & Olufsen Unleashed’ system with speakers in the headliner and front headrests can be optioned with the Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum trim levels. The more advanced sound system comes as standard on the Limited.

As we mentioned before, the 2022 Ford F150 gets the ‘Max Recline’ front seats and a fold-flat center console. While the seats allow you to position in a flat position, the center console features a unique lid that converts it into a flat working area.

Normally, the shifter would be in the way, but on the 2022 model, it drops forward into a recess. Another feature that might get overlooked by many is the increased steering wheel adjustability, which comes in handy when you’re using the truck as a work platform. Other neat features include Zone Lighting, Trailer Theft Alert, Trailer Light Check, and the Pro Power Onboard generator.

Engine, Transmission and Suspension Options

The 2022 Ford F150 has six engine options to choose from and each one of them comes equipped with a 10-speed automatic gearbox. As usual, the base trims are all RWD. The four-wheel-drive option, on the other hand, can be had with either an open differential in the rear or an electronically locking unit.

The entry-level engine is a 3.3-liter naturally-aspirated V6 producing 290 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque. The next engine in the range is the first of the two EcoBoost offerings – a 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6 that produces 325 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. Ford continues to sell its V8 engine, and that 5.0-liter unit is capable of making 400 hp and 410 lb-ft.

Coming to the second EcoBoost engine, it’s a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 which makes a respectable 400 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. The Ford F150 Raptor has a re-tuned version (High Output) of this engine that generates 450 hp and 510 lb-ft. The sixth and final engine option is the new PowerBoost hybrid powertrain that uses the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 and an electric motor to develop an impressive 430 hp and 570 lb-ft.

As far as suspension goes, you’re looking at rear live axle and leaf spring setup in the rear for most trim levels, aside from the Raptor. Even the new Tremor packs leaf springs, which isn’t that much of an issue considering that it’s still meant to be a work truck above anything else.

Cab and Bed Options

When it comes to cab options, the 2022 Ford F150 has a choice of three. You can either option it with a regular cab, a SuperCab, or a SuperCrew setup. Ford will also allow you to mix and match the cab and bed options with certain trims.

The regular cab can be had with the entry-level XL and XLT trims and be fitted with a 6.5-foot bed or 8-foot bed. The SuperCab, meanwhile, is available in the XL, XLT, and Lariat trims and can be optioned with the same two-bed options. The SuperCrew cab can be had with the XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, or Limited trims while having the option of all beds – 5.5 feet, 6.5 feet, and 8 feet. For those unfamiliar with Ford’s cab options, the regular cab can seat three, while the SuperCab and SuperCrew can fit five to six passengers.

2022 Ford F150 Towing Capacity

The 2022 Ford F-150 has a towing capacity that ranges between 8,200 lbs and 14,000 lbs, depending on engine option. Here’s the complete list:

  • 3.3L Ti-VCT V6 – 8,200 lbs
  • 3.5L EcoBoost V6 High Output – 8,200 lbs
  • 2.7L EcoBoost V6 – 10,100 lbs
  • 3.5L PowerBoost Full Hybrid V6 – 12,700 lbs
  • 5.0L Ti-VCT V8 – 13,000 lbs
  • 3.5L EcoBoost V6 – 14,000 lbs

Pricing

The 2022 Ford F150 has a starting price of $29,990 (XL trim) and goes up to $65,375 for the F150 Raptor. Keep in mind that both these prices are without any of the optional packages and don’t include additional costs like destination/delivery fees.

Don’t expect much from the base Ford F150 as it’s a bare-bones truck with a regular cab and base V6 power plant. It even misses out on basic amenities like power windows. Once optioned with a different cab and some of the optional packages, the price will go up a fair bit. This will also be the case with other trims. Find the starting prices (as of 2/10/2022) of every 2022 Ford F150 trim below:

  • XL – $29,990
  • XLT – $36,630
  • Lariat – $46,140
  • King Ranch – $57,110
  • Platinum – $59,890
  • Limited – $74,335
  • Tremor – $50,735
  • Raptor – $65,375

Is It Worth the Money?

Right now, this generation of the F150 is probably the best truck on the market. Ram is up there in terms of build quality, interior quality, and overall performance, but the 2022 Ford F150 still comes ahead as the ultimate work truck.

The new Tremor trim makes decent performance quite attainable, giving the other two truck brands proper homework. With so many drivetrain options, trim options, an
