2008 Cadillac CTS Problems – What to Look For

2008 cadillac cts problems thumbnail

In 2008, Cadillac introduced the second-generation CTS. The new model brought a vast number of improvements to the luxury sedan, bringing it back on the radar for many customers. It was larger in every aspect excluding its wheelbase, beefier and generally more convincing than its predecessor. Cadillac had to put in the effort because the 2008 CTS went up against popular offerings from big names like Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

Despite being a massive step-up from other Cadillacs before it, it was still priced competitively. So it shouldn’t be surprising then that it sold in big numbers. The fact that it had strong sales is a big plus if you are looking for one in 2022 as it increases the availability of cars in the used market. Given its popularity, you’ll have no trouble finding spares and fixes to common problems. Speaking of which, we’ve put together a list of 2008 Cadillac CTS problems and what to look for when buying one.

Taking A Look At The 2008 Cadillac CTS

The second-generation Cadillac CTS was offered with a few V6 and V8 engine options and multiple body styles – sedan, coupe, and station wagon. However, in its first year, it was only available in the sedan body style and that’s the version this article is based around. The 2008 Cadillac CTS made its debut at the North American International Auto Show in January 2007.

As we mentioned before it was noticeably larger than its predecessor. The car was longer and wider than the model it replaced, which ended up being a good thing. It’s that wider track that really gave the new CTS its stronger stance and assertive appearance. While the design of the first-generation CTS was not to everyone’s liking, the second-generation changed that with its sharper styling. Back in 2008, its edgy lines looked rather futuristic and even better than some of its rivals.

Its styling has aged quite nicely and the 2008 Cadillac CTS still current even today. Exterior changes like completely redesigned body panels, a larger grille, sleek headlights, and taillights and vents near the front doors really worked their magic. The CTS also had multi-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels which complemented the design. The 2008 Cadillac CTS was also big on features as the equipment list included navigation with real-time updates, Bose surround sound system, tire pressure monitor, integrated hard drive, and more.

As far as engine options are concerned, the base trim level uses a 3.6 liter LY7 V6 making 263 hp and 253 lb-ft of torque. This engine option is carried over from the older CTS. The second engine option, meanwhile, was a 3.6-liter direct-injection V6 VVT which made its debut in the 2008 Cadillac CTS. This engine put out a respectable 304 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. At the time, Cadillac described it as having “a compelling mixture of power, smoothness, efficiency and technical sophistication.”

Cadillac also claimed that the new 3.6 liter V6 produced power similar to many V8 engines, but with improved fuel economy. The new car came equipped with a six-speed manual transmission as standard, while the company’s six-speed automatic was available as an optional extra. The car could also be equipped with an on-demand all-wheel-drive system if it’s equipped with an automatic transmission. That’s not all, the 2008 Cadillac CTS was on the receiving end of multiple enhancements to the suspension, brakes, and steering.

2008 Cadillac CTS – What Made It Special

The 2008 Cadillac CTS surprised a lot of people when it arrived. Many weren’t used to that level of luxury, performance, and sophistication from an American offering. The car even won Motor Trend’s car of the year award in 2008. They were quoted saying that “drives like a proper BMW rival”. Other media houses also said it was more comfortable than some of its rivals.

The luxury sport sedan was heavier than the competition, which gave it slightly slower acceleration times even with the more powerful engine option. However, the 304 hp direct-injection V6 “delivered more than enough energy” according to ForbesAutos. What made the 2008 Cadillac CTS special was how competent it was as an overall package.

Known Issues

While the 2008 Cadillac CTS remains to be a good buy, it has a fair share of issues that you need to know about.

Timing Chain Stretch

First on the list of 2008 Cadillac CTS problems is one related to its timing chain. The timing chains on the CTS are prone to stretch, which can ultimately affect the timing of cams. This causes problems with the synchronization between the cams and the crank.

The ECU will notice this issue and trigger the check engine light. This light will be accompanied by an error code related to engine position or camshaft position. This is a big repair job as it requires disassembling the front half of the engine.

Bad Wheel Speed Sensor

Another common problem on these cars is a bad wheel speed sensor that causes the ABS light to light up on the dashboard. This issue will require a scan tool that can read ABS-related error codes. The scan tool will detect which of the four sensors have gone bad and allow you to test it. While this problem is fairly easy to fix as it’s either an issue with the wiring, connector, hub, or the sensor itself, diagnosing it can be a pain.

Sunroof Leak

On the list of 2008 Cadillac CTS problems is a sunroof leak. This is caused by clogged drain tubes and while that might sound like a problem common to many cars, it’s a little more complicated when it comes to the CTS.

The water that accumulates in the sunroof leaks down the side pillar which goes on to wet the wiring harness. When that happens, the dashboard will light up like a Christmas tree. Fixing this requires clearing the drain tubes and ensuring that the wiring harness is dry.

Evaporative Emission Control System

The 2008 Cadillac CTS is known to have issues with its evaporative emission control system. The car will pop error codes related to the problem. Sometimes, just changing the gas cap can fix this problem as the seal on the factory one could be completely worn out. Another component causing this is the purge solenoid. That being said, there’s a small chance that both of these components are fine, so you might be looking at a slightly more complicated issue.

Faulty Ignition Coils

Next on the list of 2008 Cadillac CTS problems are faulty ignition coils. The V6 engine is known to require a set of replacements more often than one would usually expect. While this depends largely on how the vehicle that has been driven and maintained, it’s best to replace all six ignition coils upon purchase.

Using quality ignition coils such as Bosch 0221604112 is a great way of solving any ignition issues and avoiding new ones in the future. Bosch is OEM, which is a guarantee of quality. Not to mention that this company constantly pushes the limits of ignition technologies, introducing better and more efficient solutions to the market.

Camshaft Actuator Issue

Camshaft position codes are also among the known issues with the 2008 CTS. This can be caused by faulty actuators or actuator solenoid valves. However, there’s a possibility of these error codes cropping up because of low or worn engine oil.

The oil pressure to the actuators is controlled by the solenoids at the front of the engine and what is crucial for this to work is sufficient engine oil and engine oil condition. This is why it’s important to find a vehicle that has had timely oil changes.

Door Handle Failure

The front door handles on the 2008 Cadillac CTS are electronic. Unlike conventional handles that use a mechanical rod mechanism, the CTS uses a switch and motor. This electronic door handle is known to fail because of a bad switch. This is a fairly easy and inexpensive fix.

What to Look For When Shopping For One?

We strongly recommend that you take these known issues to heart and check for them when inspecting a 2008 Cadillac CTS that you might buy. You can save yourself a lot of headaches that way. That being said, figuring out the service history of the car is a must as well. These cars are nearly 15 years old. There’s plenty that can go wrong with them.

It’s a good idea to test drive a few examples as it’ll give you an understanding of what to expect as far as ride quality is concerned. It’s highly recommended to use a scan tool to check if there are any pending error codes. Make sure to take your time inspecting the car and test all of its equipment. The car also sold extremely well, which should make finding a clean example quite easy.
