First Gen Cadillac SRX Buyers’ Guide

first gen cadillac srx review thumbnail

Cadillac’s SRX made its debut in 2003 as a 2004 model and was based on the General Motors mid-size rear-wheel-drive unibody Sigma platform. This is the same platform that Cadillac’s CTS was based on. While this platform had the potential to house multiple body styles and went on to do so, it certainly wasn’t made to be used in the full-size SUV format.

The Cadillac SRX was a crossover and quite ahead of its time by that means. Crossovers only started gaining the popularity they now enjoy much later. However, that didn’t mean the SRX wasn’t successful. Both generations of the SRX were around for quite a few years and sold like hotcakes. In fact, the second-generation model was the highest-selling Cadillac offering at one point in time. In this buyer’s guide though, we’ll be paying attention to the first-gen Cadillac SRX and without further ado, let’s begin.

Taking A Look At The first-generation Cadillac SRX

Before we get to discussing bits like the known issues and what you should look out for, here’s a quick rundown. The Cadillac SRX was available with two engine options – a GM 3.6 V6 or a 4.6 Northstar V8. It missed out on the lower capacity version (GM 2.8 LP1) of the GM 3.6 V6 which was available on the CTS with whom it shared its platform.

The V6-powered SRX made 255 hp and 254 lb-ft of torque, while the V8 powerplant produced 320 hp and 315 lb-ft of torque. The Cadillac SRX also had two transmission options – a five- or six-speed automatic unit. Another big mechanical option was the availability of a rear-wheel drive-based AWD system. This system works owing to a transfer case mounted to the rear of the transmission which sends power to the front wheels via a propeller shaft.

The wagon-like crossover also came equipped with ABS, traction control, and a brake assist function as standard. Other features included GM’s MagneRide active shock absorbers. This suspension paired with the unibody Sigma chassis gave the Cadillac SRX car-like handling.

The equipment levels didn’t fail to impress as well, standard with both engine options on the SRX was leather interior and curtain side airbags. Wood interior trim and heated front seats, meanwhile, were standard with the V8 SRX and options on the V6. While that doesn’t sound much, remember this is 2004 we are talking about. Other optional extras included a sunroof, navigation system, and third-row seating that increased the total seating capacity to 7.

Like most vehicles, the first-generation Cadillac SRX received updates in its production run of 5 years.

2005 Cadillac SRX

Just a year after being around, a minor change came in the form of chrome accents on the gauge cluster. Cadillac also introduced a towing package for SRXs with both engine options.

2006 Cadillac SRX

In 2006, the standard equipment list grew longer with the additions of a power tailgate and satellite radio. This model year also saw the wheels getting a redesign and a new wooden interior trim.

2007 Cadillac SRX

2007 was one of the most significant years as far as updates are concerned. The Cadillac SRX got a revised console and an audio system by Bose. The V8 version used a new six-speed automatic gearbox. Cadillac also brought in a Sport package that gave the vehicle 20-inch wheels, all-wheel drive, and an LSD. There was also a theater package that improved the sound system in the vehicle.

2008 Cadillac SRX

Not a lot changed in 2008 apart from a revised steering wheel that now used a three-spoke layout.

2009 Cadillac SRX

Similarly, in 2009, the only addition to the Cadillac SRX came in the form of an adaptive remote start function. This optional extra would enable functions like the heated seats and climate control system while starting the vehicle remotely.

Cadillac SRX – What Made It Special

As we mentioned before, the Cadillac SRX was quite early to enter the crossover space and that helped it garner the interest of many buyers. The “tall wagon” as Car and Driver called it at the time was capable of seating an impressive 7 passengers.

But that’s not all that made it special, both its engines, the V6 and V8 used modern constructions. The engines feature modern technologies like variable valve timing and dual overhead camshafts which were quite impressive, especially at the time. As we mentioned before, the car’s unibody chassis also gave it car-like dynamics and that’s something people really admired.

The Cadillac SRX took home the Car and Driver’s Five Best Trucks award a total of 3 times (in 2004, 2005, and 2006) and was also nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2004.

Cadillac SRX – Known Issues

From seat wear to timing chain-related problems, the Cadillac SRX has its fair share of known issues. Here’s the list.

Seat Wear

Leather seats, as mentioned before, are part of standard equipment on the Cadillac SRX. While these are quite sturdy, higher mileage examples will experience noticeable wear. The seat wear is most evident on the bolsters and the perforated areas of the most frequently used seats.

Faulty Keyless Entry

There’s an issue related to the body control module that causes a faulty keyless entry system. The body control module is responsible for controlling many electrical components, but it’s quite common for it to cause problems with the locking and unlocking function of the remote.

Timing Chain Trouble

One of the most major known issues with the Cadillac SRX concerns the timing chain of the GM 3.6 V6 engine. If the vehicle is equipped with this engine, it’s advised to give it a thorough inspection as the timing chains are susceptible to stretching. This is one known issue that should not be ignored as its failure can cause serious damage.

Ignition Coil

The GM 3.6 V6 engine runs a coil-on-plug ignition coil, and it’s known to require replacement more often than recommended by the service manual. However, the service life of ignition coils still depends on your usage pattern. The best thing to do if you’re newly acquiring a vehicle with this engine is to replace the set of six. One of the best options for replacements, especially when it comes to the High Feature engine are the Bosch 0221604112 ignition coils.

Sunroof Leak

This known issue is pretty self-explanatory and also common on many other vehicles. When it comes to the Cadillac SRX though, it’s caused by clogged drain plugs. This can be a time-consuming and expensive problem in some cases. The sunroof leak is a problem not just on the first-gen Cadillac SRX, but on the second-generation as well.

Oil Consumption

An issue that’s specific to the Cadillac SRX with the High Feature V6 is oil consumption. It is said that some engines are known to burn oil. While this wouldn’t have been as big of an issue with some other engines, it is with this one as it’s quite sensitive to low engine oil. The SRX is known to develop problems, including the aforementioned timing chain one owing to low engine oil.

Head Gasket Failure

While the Northstar V8 engine option has proven to be the more reliable engine option of the two, it has some shortcomings. The most common known issue with it is head gasket failure. While this isn’t a major repair job, it will still put a dent in your wallet.

Dashboard Warping

Another interior-related known issue has to do with the dashboard. Cadillac SRXs that have been left out in the sun for extended periods tend to have warped dashboards. While seat wear is easy to fix, a warped dashboard is not. This is why it’s important to keep an eye out.

What to Look For When Shopping For One?

The base price for the Cadillac SRX was $38,880 for the V6 and $45,880 for the V8 option. Nowadays though, they can be had in the $5000-7000 range, depending on the model year and mileage. That makes incredibly good value for money and quite hard to ignore, more so if you are looking for a vehicle that can seat up to 7 passengers.

What you also get with the first-gen SRX are the neat boxy Cadillac design elements and a comfortable interior. What we can’t stress enough though is to make sure it has a good service history. Both engine options in the car were quite ahead of their time and required a little more attention than buyers were used to giving back in the day. Also, look out for all of the known issues above while giving it a regular inspection.

Use Genuine Parts to Keep Your Cadillac SRX Happy

As we said, the Cadillac SRX is tech-laden which indirectly means that it won’t run too well with low-quality spare parts. Make sure to get OEM spare parts to keep away those scary error lights. The good thing is that you are already on Newparts.com, where you can find what you need for your Cadillac SRX.
