BERU is a brand that was established in 1912 when Albert Ruprecht and Julius Behr decided to open a spark plug factory. During the late 1920s, the company began to develop the world’s first glow plugs for starting cold diesel engines.
Like most German factories, BERU had to pause its operations and focus on manufacturing military equipment during World War II.
After the war, BERU continued to manufacture glow plugs and work on diesel cold start systems. Today, the company holds around 40% of the global market share for glow plugs. It is also one of the top five European manufacturers of ignition technology for petrol engines.
Nearly every OE manufacturer of passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and engines orders products from BERU.
The company headquarters is located in Ludwigsburg, Germany, but the brand has a strong presence in the automotive industry in almost every part of the world.
In 2020, the American multinational automotive supplier BorgWarner acquired BERU. After the acquisition, BorgWarner announced that it would gradually change the aftermarket packaging of BERU glow plugs, ignition coils, and glow plug controllers.
The packaging now features the prominent blue BorgWarner logo. The BERU brand continues to operate as it did before the purchase of BorgWarner.
